Can a pet diet pill be on way?
Tuxedo is a fat cat, and we're not talking about bulging bank accounts here.

It's Tuxedo's body that -- mildly put -- is swelling.

A 6-year-old feline living in Stratford, Tuxedo weighs a whopping 35 pounds.

"He can't move. He goes outside and just flops over. I'm going to send him to Weight Watchers," his owner, home health aide Maureen Nagy of Stratford, joked.

With the prime holiday and party season now in full swing, humans may see expanded waistlines. Many will try dieting and exercise programs in an attempt to live up to their New Year's resolutions.

But two Connecticut drug companies working together have a different solution for Nagy and other owners with way-too-pudgy pets: a diet pill for animals.

Neurogen, a drug-development company in Branford, recently announced it sealed a licensing pact with Pfizer Inc., a drug maker with Groton research and development offices, to create a diet pill for pets.

Tuxedo "already doesn't eat much," Nagy said, adding that she doubted that a diet alone would help her corpulent kitty shed pounds. "I'd probably try [the diet pill for my cat]."

Pfizer is hoping that its diet drug Neuro Peptide Y will do the trick.

In the pact, Neurogen shared with Pfizer its formula for NPY, a drug developed to block brain chemicals, or neurotransmitters, which stimulate the urge to eat. Neurogen's developing the recipe for humans. Pfizer's animal research division will adapt NPY for use in animals.

"It is in the earliest stages of development," said a spokes-woman for Pfizer, refusing further comment.

Dr. Joan Poster had more to say, though.

"A diet pill for animals? That sounds absurd," said Poster, owner at the Poster Animal Hospital in Westport.

Still, products like doggie diet pills or kitty slim tabs could be a big business. Tuxedo is far from the only fat cat around.

Up to 45 percent of the dogs and cats nationwide share his hefty dilemma. Obesity has become a major health problem in pets, especially those 6 to 12 years old, according to PetEducation.com, a Web site led by two veterinarians.

So what does a concerned pet owner do? Break out the kitty treadmill? Take the dog to aerobics? Find a feline fat farm or a pet boot camp?

It's not that complicated, said Poster.
"Animals can't get in the refrigerator, so just feed them...
